Volunteer Spotlight: Derrick Loughlin
Derrick Loughlin, one of New Hampshire's dedicated event photographers, made it his mission this year to recruiting fellow photographers to capture Granite United Way's Day of Caring. As a former nurse and Marine, Derrick brings a unique perspective to his volunteer work and is a great example of how professional skills can be channeled into powerful community service.
When were you first introduced to Granite United Way? What was your first impression of the organization?
I was first introduced to Granite United Way last summer, where I met the fantastic Christina Huntress. She talked so highly of the organization, and if the organization was half as good as Christina's caring personality, I thought it would be amazing. It turns out, I was wrong—it was much better than I originally thought. Everyone in the organization from top to bottom has been nothing but kind, caring and generous.
What motivated you to recruit other volunteer photographers for the Day of Caring this year?
Last year I volunteered as a Day of Caring photographer and saw how massive of a day it really was. I ended up going to 2 or 3 volunteer sites, but there were so many more locations to cover. That's when I decided I would build a team of photographers to help showcase the amazing impact that Granite United Way volunteers have on our communities.
Why is it important to volunteer in your community?
Volunteering connects you with people in your community and enables you to see the areas that could use help. It's now more important than ever to support your local nonprofits because the lack of federal funding strains their budgets. All organizations need a strong backbone, including their volunteers.
How does volunteering impact you personally or professionally?
Being a nurse and someone who likes to help others, volunteering fills my cup. After seeing so much suffering, I know that when I volunteer, I am contributing in a purposeful and specific way. I know where my hard work is going, and that means a lot to me.
What do you enjoy most about photographing Day of Caring?
What I enjoyed the most was seeing the communities come together for a common cause. I was in the Marines, and you always had a common cause you were striving to reach, whether that was a training mission, getting free time, or deploying overseas. Nowadays, it's hard to connect with people in the same way—a lot of people are on their own wavelengths. I love seeing people come together, because we need more of it.
What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering during Day of Caring for the first time?
Do it! No, but seriously, I'd connect them with any one of Granite United Way’s staff, because they are all so welcoming, trustworthy, collaborative and compassionate. Every project helps local communities, big and small. Give what you can.
