Tax Assistance: In Person or in PJs
Nov232020
Granite United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is providing new volunteer opportunities this year.
With the uncertainty of the upcoming tax season due to COVID-19, tax preparers and intake specialists are needed more than ever. With your safety in mind, we are offing a remote option, from the comfort of your own home. We welcome people to do this important work in person, or in PJs.
Volunteer roles:
- Intake Specialist: Review taxpayer’s documents to make sure they are complete; explain that returns will be prepared remotely to reduce in-person contact and make arrangements to complete the return; may be done in-person with limited contact or entirely remotely by phone or video chat.
- Tax Preparer: Gather with other volunteers, with no taxpayers present, to prepare and review returns together and to ask questions; or remotely, prepare on your own schedule in coordination with a local VITA site. Assistance from fellow preparers or the site coordinator is only a click or call away.
- Facilitator: Assist tax filers who have a computer and internet access with completing their own returns. Using software and training we provide, conduct remote conversations to help people navigate the software and understand their own taxes.
In all cases, training is provided and you can expect support either in person or remotely, depending on your situation, and certification required. If you are willing to help and can give 3-to-6 hours a week during tax season, this unique volunteer opportunity is for you!
